10 Steps To Understanding Makeup Products.

We all have our days when we just look way too tired, and need some help freshening up with some make up. Yet, with all the makeup products out there, we don't always know where to start. With your face washed and patted dry, follow this list for a quick rundown of makeup products to aid in your experimentation journey in discovering your signature look.

1.    Skincare
o  Light Facial moisturizer: Apply this under your eyes, over your eyelids and entire face to help prime your skin, so that you hydrate your skin, as well as, help your makeup set and last longer (~8hrs).

Optional--Hydrating face tonic: To soften skin and prep it for moisturizing

2.    Foundation
o  Liquid Foundation: Apply to help create an even complexion. It's very important you match your foundation to your skin color, otherwise it can be a total deal breaker and make things look off.

Tip--If you have good skin, you don't need to add foundation, you can use a tinted moisturizer/concealer instead. (A tinted moisturizer can be made by mixing your facial moisturizer with some of your liquid foundation, or concealer.)

3.    Concealer
o  Concealer: Helps cover dark areas under your eyes, redness around your nose, and other blemishes. In addition, highlights/contours places on the face you want to stand out by applying it in the middle of your forehead, bridge of your nose, and chin. Choose a color that is one shade lighter than your natural skin color.

Optional--Corrector: Apply before concealer if you have more serious skin conditions like acne scars, melasma, or rosacea etc..

Optional-- Compact  Mineral Setting powder: Use after liquid foundation and concealer has been applied to help remove excess oil/shine and prevent foundation from rubbing off. Also, can be used as a bronzer or foundation as well. Moreover, can be a tool to help touch up your makeup throughout the day. Important to add if you're going to have a photo shoot.

4.    Bronzer
o  Matte brown Bronzer: To contour and emulate a sun-kissed glow, apply it in the shape of the number 3 along your hairline near your forehead, cheekbone and jawline via a medium sized bronzer brush.

Tip: Instead of a bronzer, you can always use a setting powder 2 shades darker than your skin tone. Don't forget to apply some to the neck as well.

5.    Blush
o  sheer Blush: Apply to apples of cheeks, then blend and fade it back towards your temples to warm up your complexion and appear more radiant.  Choose a color 1-2 shades darker or lighter than your natural blush color.

Tip: Add crème blush to crème foundation, and powder blush to powder foundation. Remember to not add blush too close to your eyes, leave an index finger width of room in between.

6.    Lips
o  Lip balm: This helps hydrate and smooth your lips before applying lipstick.
o  Lipstick: Express your individuality and apply to lips via a lip brush for precision. Choose a color 1-2 shades darker or lighter than your natural lip color.

Tip: To help lipstick last longer, you can add lip stain first. To help create plump lips, fill the middle section with a light concealer, then blend it with finger and add nude lip gloss. To help define lips and prevent lipstick color from bleeding out, line your lips with a fine tip concealer brush.

Optional--Lip liner pencil: Choose a matte color that is two colors darker than your natural lip color.

7.    Brows
o  Brow powder: To help frame your eyes and make it look more open, first shape your brows. Then add medium brown brow powder to just the areas that are sparse. Blend it in with a brow brush. Choose a color that matches your natural brow color.

Tips-- To help define your brows, apply concealer directly above and below your brows.

8.    Eye shadow
o  Eye shadow:
      1) Eye base color--To brighten the eyes choose a light neutral eye shadow color to cover from lash line to brow.
      2) Eyelid color-- To add some warmth choose a light/medium eye shadow color to cover from lash line to eye crease.
      3) Accent color--To add depth and definition add a darker eye shadow color in a "V" shape from your outer lash line to eye crease. Then, blend all the hard edges with a lighter eye shadow. For a smokey eye look you can substitute the accent color with a bronzer

Tip: To brighten the eye, add very little white eye shadow on tear duct and bridge of nose. Another option is to add concealer in a "V" shape from your outter lash line to eye crease, middle of eyelid, and just below your brow bone.

9.    Eyeliner/Macara
o  Gel Eyeliner: To make your lashes look lush, apply to top lash line starting from the outer corner to the inner corner.
o  Black Mascara: You can get an eyelash primer to lengthen and thicken lashes before adding mascara

10.  Other handy products
o  Wet wipes.
o  Visine: helps with bloodshot eyes, making them look bright and clear
o  Oil based makeup remover to remove waterproof products like mascara or gel liners.
o  Eye lashes #110 & #21: Place a very small amount of glue on end of lashes and start placing the longer lashes at the outer corners, as you work your way towards the middle with the the shorter lashes. Help press the lash down with the end of a bobby pin. There should be a minimum of 3 individual lashes per eye.

Ergonomics: Assessing Your Work Desk Set Up

Have you ever sat at your work desk and felt knee, bottom, back, neck, shoulder, or wrist pain? Have you considered looking at how your equipment and furniture set up might possibly be causing the excess pain? Lets consider your workplace ergonomics and become more aware of how your body feels. Here is a quick exercise to evaluate and improve your work desk set up in five easy steps.

1) Adjust seat chair height to make sure shoulders are relaxed, elbows are close to the body at an open angle (90-110), and wrists in a straight neutral position. Feet should be flat on the floor, with hips and knees at 90 degrees or slightly open angles, with thighs parallel to floor, and having adequate leg room under your workstation.(If your feet are dangling, and you do not have an adjustbale desk consider adding a foot rest to bring the floor to you. )

2) Adjust the backrest to position the body at an open angle (90-110) at the hip. Adjust the chair's lumbar support to fit the curve of your lower back.  Adjust Armrest height so you can lightly rest your forearms.  Adjust seat pan depth so that your body is against the backrest leaving a 1-3 inch gap between the front of the seat pan and the back of your legs.

3) Keeping the neck in neutral position, center the monitor in front of your body and place it arms length away. Adjust monitor height so that the top edge of the screen is at, or slightly below eye level. There should be no glare, and little movement required to view the monitors. (If you have two monitors, they should be the same height)

4) Place keyboard and mouse same height. You don't want to over or under extend when typing or using a mouse; keep your wrist in a straight or neutral position. (preferred to keep thumbs in an up position) With forearms parallel to the floor, be careful not to plant your wrist when typing.

5) Other things to consider:
  • Use speakerphone mode, or a hands-free device, like a headset when talking; Avoid typing on your smartphone more than 10 min at a time, and use your fingers rather than using your thumbs to type.
  • To promote blood flow and healing its important to change positions at least every 2 hours from sitting to standing.
  • Add at least 2 hours of standing in your day (maybe while using the phone). Avoid remaining in a static position for >15 min at a time when standing, frequently shift your weight from one side to the next.

What changes have you found most helpful?

How to determine your Face Shape

Knowing your face shape will help you make more informed decisions when choosing what hairstyles will help flatter your face, what makeup techniques will bring out your positive features,  what sunglasses are ideal for your face shape etc..

First,  with your hair tied back measure the following four things and write them down:

~ Forehead/Hairline: Measure horizontally from hairline to hairline the widest part of your forehead.
~Jawline shape: Measure the angle of your jaw to your chin, then multiply this number by two.  Consider if your jaw is rounded, square, or pointed.
~Face length: Measure from the top of your forehead to the bottom of your chin.  Consider if your face length is longer than it is wide.
~Cheekbones: Measure the widest part of your cheeks from the edge of your face. (Remember to keep ruler as straight as possible.)

Second, with a mirror in hand, use the following simple chart to help you decide what face shape you have. If you have the feature listed in the box, you get one point. In the end, the one that has the most points is your face shape.

(If it is a tie, use the key features section to help determine which one out of the remaining face shapes applies to you more.)

I have an oval face shape, what is yours?

Preparing for Nursing interviews: Tips

You completed the nursing application process, and after weeks of waiting you finally hear back that they want to bring you in for an interview. SCORE!! You are so excited and elated about the news, yet slowly then feel the anxiety creep in and questions start going through your mind.  What if they ask me a difficult question? What if I get so nervous I will start stumbling on my words? What should I wear?

These are normal feelings. After taking in a couple deep breaths, you can now focus on how to prepare. In one year, I was able to get 24 interviews as a new graduate.

Here a few tips I have when preparing for your interview:
  1. Create a Portfolio binder.
    • Have things that highlight your success, your resume, certificates, recommendations etc.
  2. Research the company.
    • Know their mission statement and values.
    • Be prepared to answer the question " why do you want to work here? ".
  3. Write down and Practice interview questions.
    • Know how to answer these questions:
      • Tell us about yourself.
      • What made you choose nursing?
      • Tell us a time you had conflict with a colleague or patient and how you dealt with it.
      •  Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
  4. Dress professional.
    • Make a good first impression with nails manicured, hair done, and light natural makeup done.
  5. Always have at least 3 questions ready to ask at the end of the interview
  6. Lastly, after an interview, go have fun and destress. You did it champ the worst part is over.

What kind of questions were you asked in an interview?
