Preparing for Nursing interviews: Tips

You completed the nursing application process, and after weeks of waiting you finally hear back that they want to bring you in for an interview. SCORE!! You are so excited and elated about the news, yet slowly then feel the anxiety creep in and questions start going through your mind.  What if they ask me a difficult question? What if I get so nervous I will start stumbling on my words? What should I wear?

These are normal feelings. After taking in a couple deep breaths, you can now focus on how to prepare. In one year, I was able to get 24 interviews as a new graduate.

Here a few tips I have when preparing for your interview:
  1. Create a Portfolio binder.
    • Have things that highlight your success, your resume, certificates, recommendations etc.
  2. Research the company.
    • Know their mission statement and values.
    • Be prepared to answer the question " why do you want to work here? ".
  3. Write down and Practice interview questions.
    • Know how to answer these questions:
      • Tell us about yourself.
      • What made you choose nursing?
      • Tell us a time you had conflict with a colleague or patient and how you dealt with it.
      •  Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
  4. Dress professional.
    • Make a good first impression with nails manicured, hair done, and light natural makeup done.
  5. Always have at least 3 questions ready to ask at the end of the interview
  6. Lastly, after an interview, go have fun and destress. You did it champ the worst part is over.

What kind of questions were you asked in an interview?
