Nurse: Termination

You have been called into your manager's office, and have been told those dreaded words, "we are going to have to terminate you." Sometimes this can be a surprise, other times expected. At first, you might be in shock. Did you really just hear those words?! A dose of reality just overcomes you that you did indeed just hear them. What now?

Well, its important for you to ask/do the following:

  • Ask what the reason is for your termination
  • If you can be transferred instead to another unit/department.
  • If you can have a resignation instead
    • Remember, you don't have to sign anything. If you don't agree with the evaluation of your termination, you can state, " I will respectfully not sign. I don't think I have been justly evaluated, and will consult with HR."
  • If you can have a copy of the manager's notes for professional development
    • Ask what the policy is on giving reference to former employers.
  • Contact HR/union to help understand your rights and contract.
    • If this is going to have a monetary reimbursement fee attached to it.
    • Unemployment eligibility (Also , you can contact the State Department of Labor)
    • Compensation and benefits.
  • Don't forget to get all of your belongings
Remember, its ok to allow yourself to feel those emotions, but in no way say something that you will regret later. Be professional. State what you have done and accomplished so far within the organization. Thank them for the opportunity to work with them, and tell them you will use this feedback for future positions (Yes, even though their feedback might be bull crap).

And although it may seem like this is the end, know its not. This can be an opportunity for something better. You are not defined by the job you have. Reinvent yourself and move on. Steve jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Walt Disney, Thomas Edison etc.. and other really successful people have all been fired. Keep believing in yourself, and move on. Cultivate a growth mindset. You never lose...either you win, or learn.

I leave you with this quote, "It's a trap to be fueled by praise, or defeated by criticism. Neither define you. We're constantly becoming, changing, growing-- so nobody's opinion can embody who you are. Don't commit to approval, commit to growth. The growth that takes place when no one is watching. The growth that outlives the opinions of people." --Brittney Moses.

How did you deal with your termination process?
