As people pass through different life stages, certain life milestones are achieved at each phase. To help guide your ambitions in creating a well-rounded life plan for yourself or family, below you will find a list of usual milestones achieved by age.
Disclaimer: This should not put any undue pressure on individuals, yet serve as a flexible guide taking in consideration differences in individuals and life circumstances.

Infancy(Birth-18mo.) | Trust vs. Mistrust | Birth: Parents can open a college saving account (529) to put in ~25$/week. |
18 mo.: Start potty training | ||
Early childhood (2-3 years) | Autonomy vs. Shame | 2: Introduce a new language, can start dressing themselves. |
3: Can recite the alphabet, and count to 10. | ||
Preschool (4-5 years): Kindergarten | Initiate vs. Guilt | 4: Can write the alphabet |
5. Start Kindergarten. Start age appropriate chores, and developing organizational skills. Have a piggy bank with small allowance (25 cents per age/week). Can do addition. | ||
School Age(6-13 years): 1st grade to 8th | Industry vs. Inferiorly | 6. Learn an instrument, or how to sing. Can sound out, or decode unfamiliar words when reading. |
8. Start playing a sport, and learn importance of an exercise routine. Develop a hygiene/sleep routine. Can do multiplication and division. Get a library card. Start learning to touch-type on family laptop. | ||
10. Parents can open a custodial mutual fund investing count. Start giving on commission (based on chores), rather than allowance to teach that money is earned. Encourage them to save 1000$ for emergencies. Teach the difference between needing/wanting things. Consider discussing entrepreneurial ventures, desired lifestyle and dreams for their future. Start doing laundry, stove top meals, and learn importance of good nutrition. Have an emotional/mental health check in. | ||
13. Learn to safely use tools (drill, ladder, saw, pliers, hammer, mow the lawn) | ||
Adolescence (14-18 years): 9th grade to 12th grade | Identity vs. Confusion | 14. Get a phone (to text, and call). Have the birds and the bees talk, with girls experiencing their first period and boys armpit/mustache hair. |
15. Get a driving permit, laptop (with parental control). Have an emotional/mental health check in. Take a personality test. Think about possible career options, and possibly start taking college courses. | ||
16. Get a driving license. Know how to check tire pressure, inflate tires, change a tire, jump start a dead battery, replace windshield wipers, know when car needs an oil change, respond to check engine light. Create a resume/cover letter, apply for a job, get a letter of recommendation. Learn how to file their own taxes, open joint checking account with adult. Consider paying into the family income (20$/wk). Start a budget. Go to the department store and educate on choosing properly fitted clothes. Buy quality leather purse/heels for girls. Educate on how to choose bra size, and how to apply makeup to enhance looks. Buy quality leather wallet/loafers for boys. | ||
17. Have the dating/courting conversation. Open IRA account. Get a passport. Take baptism/confirmation. Set money aside to donate to church. Take part in church youth/choir, and volunteer opportunities. | ||
18. Considered an adult, and can thus register to vote. Get your own car (Have at least 5,000$ saved); Open-up a checking/savings account. Open a Credit Card. Open a business (online/home-based). Start College | ||
Young Adulthood (19-25 years): College | Intimacy vs Isolation | Marriage: Have at least ~30,000$ saved for wedding expenses. Save: 3-6 months of expenses as an Emergency fund. Learn about interior designing/homemaking. Evaluate/create efficient organizational home systems |
20: Reevaluate your dreams, interests and passions. Take time to become aware of your values. If you haven’t started already, have an emotional/mental health check in every 5 years at minimum. | ||
21: Book a trip out of the country. Start saving for retirement | ||
Adulthood (26-40 years) | 28: Buy your first home (Have at least 30,000$ saved). Have first child. | |
30: Consider a hair care routine for graying hair. | ||
35: Consider starting a business if you have not already. Consider moving into a better house, or buying a rental property. Go on vacations at least ~2x/year. | ||
Middle Adulthood (40-65 years) | Generativity vs stagnation | 40: If you haven’t started already, start getting cholesterol, vision and hearing screenings every ~5 years. In addition, check your blood pressure every ~2 years, and get a pap smear. |
45: Prepare for menopause, continue exercise routine. | ||
50: Consider getting a mammogram, and colonoscopy 55: Reevaluate retirement plans/goals. | ||
Maturity (65+ years) | Integrity vs despair | 65: Apply for Medicare, and retire. |
