RN Job offered: Pre-employment paperwork

Human Resources has contacted you to let you know that after all of your grueling interviews, you have been chosen for the RN position. Its exciting, but what do you do now ? Here is a quick outline of what to expect during the pre-employment onboarding phase.

1)   First, if you don’t have a RN license in the state you will be working in, contact that state’s Nursing Commission and get your license ASAP.

2)   You will receive an “official offer letter” in an email that includes: start date, hourly rate, FTE etc.. Look over it for any inconsistencies and accept it.

3)   Then, HR will contact you to start your pre-employment onboarding  requirements that include: criminal background check, drug screen, reference check, credential verification, and other new hire paperwork.
      Note: Sometimes employees contract a third-party to conduct the criminal background check/drug screen. When you get an email from them, it can be time sensitive  so it is important that you complete them ASAP.

     The new hire paperwork include:
  • Conviction/criminal history information
  • Confidentiality agreement: Indicates that you will not access/share protected information without permission.
  • I-9 Form: A federal form that verifies your eligibility for employment to work in U.S.
  • W-2 Form: A federal form that indicates the amount of taxes you want to be withheld from your paycheck.
  • A specialty RN training program agreement: Indicates that you will work for your employer a specified amount of time after your training program.

      4)   Then, you will be asked to complete a health assessmentarrange direct deposit if that is what you want, and make an ID badge photo

      5)   An orientation schedule will be provided. During orientation, you will learn more about your employer, their electronic charting system, and the benefits they offer.
      Note: Typically employees have 30 days from the start date to accept/decline benefits until the next cycle year.

      Congratulations, you have now successfully completed the onboarding process!

Simplified Hospital organizational structure

Grasping an institution's organizational structure helps provide the big picture in understanding where to get/find needed resources. As a new nurse, knowing who is accountable for what will help you contact the correct personnel and navigate through the system more efficiently. The following is a simplified version of what composes a hospital organization:

Nursing Services: Take care of patients, facilitate effective implementation of all services.

Therapeutic Services:
PT/OT; Speech/Language pathologist--Improve mobility, and identify speech/swallowing disorders.
Respiratory Therapy--Treat those with airway problems, and take care of airway equipment.
Pharmacy--Dispense medication, provide information on drugs, and correct ways to take them.
Social services--connect patient to community resources (ex. financial, housing, mental etc. )
Spiritual care--Provide emotional, and spiritual support to patients and their families. (ex. Chaplains, pastors/priests).

Diagnostic services:
Imaging--Radiology, MRI, CT, Ultra Sound
Laboratory-- Identify blood/tissue abnormalities.
Doctors--Provide diagnoses and treatment plan.

Support Services
Central supply--Order, stock, and distribute medical equipment/supplies.
Housekeeping--Clean the room/environment. Replace sharp receptacles.
Maintenance--Fix electrical/structural malfunctions
Dietary--Provide nutritional meals.

Administration:
Managers--Oversee budgeting, implement unit improvement initiatives.

Building positive relationships

A part of keeping strong and healthy is being able to honestly analyze your relationships and social environment.

There is a saying that goes, " tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are". So, who do you hang out with? What kind of characteristics do they have that you would like? If there are few, or almost none, then I would think twice before spending/giving your time to them.

Sometimes, we can be engaging in crappy relationships with people, friends, and family that just don't add anything productive or positive to your life. In fact, they just seek to suck all your time and energy......Time and energy that can be put towards planning an adventure trip, exercising your body into shape, focusing on setting goals for yourself, or even trying that new recipe/hobby you've always wanted to start.

Time is precious, lets spend it with people who radiate positivity, encouragement, humility and honesty. All awhile, radiating that energy ourselves as well.

What people radiate that positive energy in your lives?

Understanding Yourself

Sometimes communicating with others is not always as successful as intended to be. You thought you were clear as butter, yet you still just don't understand why a person does/acts the way they do. Are they just trying to drive me up the walls on purpose?!

Im a psychology junkie, and love to understand how our minds think, and what is the root of certain tendencies and behaviors. So, on a thoughtful winters day, I stumbled upon this personality test that I believe is a gem in understanding yourself, your spouse, friend or loved one.

It takes 12 minutes to complete, try not to leave any neutral answers, and be honest. Best of all....its FREE!
https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

It tells you your strengths and weaknesses, how you are in romantic relationships, as a friend or parent, possible career paths, and your workplace habits.

I had most of my family members, friends, and even newly met strangers take this test. The results are remarkably accurate. If you still are skeptical, thats ok, but just give it a chance and take it.

Let me know what you get!

Navigating an Airport

Find the time to vacation. In addition to grinding at the job and providing financially for your family, it's also about creating lasting memories with your loved ones. I know airports can sometimes be intimidating, but don't let that be a reason for not flying out for an adventure.

Here are some helpful tips on how to navigate through an airport with ease:

1) Ask to get dropped off at the airport terminal where your airline's name is located. (That way it will save you time walking long distances to get to your airline's check-in counter.)
2) With your passport and itinerary in hand locate a self-service kiosk to print out your boarding passes.
3) If needed, go to the airline's check-in counter and check in your baggage. (You can also ask for a wheelchair, or help printing a boarding pass if needed. This is also a good time to verify that your baggage will be sent to your final destination.)
4) You will need to go through security, and then find your gate number that is written on your boarding pass or the flight boards located throughout the airport. Once you have arrived at your gate location, wait to board.
5) When they call your zone (located on your boarding pass), get in line, and hand them your boarding pass as you enter the plane.
6) Relax and enjoy the flight.

7) When you arrive, follow the signs to baggage claim, and get your baggage.

What if its a transfer flight?
If its a transfer flight, look at the flight boards, and check what gate/time your transfer flight is located. Then, wait for boarding time. Usually, you don't have to pick up your baggage until you arrive at your final destination.

What if its an international flight?
If its an international flight, you will have to go though customs/immigration first. You will hand them your passport and paper they had you fill out on the airplane (A Customs Declaration form). Keep this for when you fly back.
~~~>Then,  go get your baggage, and go through security.
Now that you have completed the flight portion of the trip,  get/find a ride to your hotel/reservation destination and create those lasting memories. And if you ever decide to fly back, just start the steps all over again.
Tip: Arrive to the airport 1 hour earlier if its a domestic flight, and 2 hours earlier if its an international flight.
